Convert SHS to another file type
To convert your SHS file to another format, you need Microsoft Windows or other System software.
Convert a file to SHS
To convert other file formats to the "Legacy OLE Container" file type, you need software like Microsoft Windows or a similar tool.
About SHS files
A .SHS file is a Shell Scrap Object, a legacy file type created by earlier versions of Microsoft Windows (95 through XP) when a user dragged and dropped selected content - such as text from Microsoft Word or a formula from Excel - directly onto the desktop. These files act as proprietary OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) containers, essentially wrapping a fragment of a document or image in a system-level envelope.
Users today face significant friction with .SHS files because support was discontinued starting with Windows Vista. Modern operating systems (Windows 10/11) cannot open these files natively as the required handler (shscrap.dll) is no longer included, rendering your data inaccessible without legacy environments. Furthermore, .SHS files are historically notorious for security risks; Windows used to hide this extension by default, allowing malicious scripts to masquerade as text files (e.g., invoice.txt.shs appearing as invoice.txt).
To retrieve the trapped data, conversion is the only viable path. For text scraps, converting to DOCX, RTF, or TXT restores editability in modern word processors. For graphical scraps, extracting to JPG or PNG ensures the visual content is preserved.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SHS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SHS file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "OLE Content Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to SHS, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "OLE Content Storage" category.
The SHS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SHS converter.
