About OPT files
The .OPT extension stands for "Options" and is notorious for being a heavily fragmented file type. Because thousands of applications need a place to save user preferences, project settings, or optimization caches, the internal structure of an .OPT file depends entirely on the software that created it. The most common variant is the MySQL database options file (usually named db.opt), which stores the default character set and collation for a specific database. Other frequent creators include Microsoft Visual Studio for developer workspace settings, industrial automation tools like CODESYS, trading platforms like MetaTrader 5, and PC games like Arma 3 or Cyberpunk 2077 for storing video configurations.
The main problem with .OPT files is their total lack of standardization. They can be simple plain text, UTF-16 encoded strings, zipped archives (like OpticalRayTracer setups), or proprietary binary formats (like Microsoft Compound Document formats). This makes them highly unpredictable. If you double-click an unknown .OPT file, your operating system will typically fail to open it, as it lacks a default association. You cannot easily share these files for review because the recipient needs the exact same software to read them properly.
To figure out what is inside your file, you need to parse its underlying data structure. For text-based configuration files, we recommend converting them to TXT, JSON, or XML to easily read the parameters across any platform. If the file is a binary cache or a zipped setup, extracting the internal data is the only reliable workaround to view the contents without buying expensive, specialized software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OPT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OPT file to PDF, PPM, PPT, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP or IGES, you can use MySQL or similar software from the "Software Configuration Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to OPT, try MySQL or another comparable tool in the "Software Configuration Storage" category.
The OPT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OPT converter.
