Its most common function is as a Database Options File for MySQL and MariaDB, specifically the db.opt file found in database directories. This simple text file defines the default character set and collation for the database. Another frequent use is within Microsoft Visual Studio (legacy versions) as a binary Workspace Options file, storing window positions and breakpoints.
A common issue with .OPT files is their ambiguity. A user cannot determine if the file is a simple text configuration, a proprietary binary blob from an Omron PLC, or a compiled optimization cache from MetaTrader 5. Attempting to open a binary .OPT file in a standard text editor often results in garbled data, while manually editing a text-based game configuration (e.g., for Cyberpunk 2077 or Arma 3) can cause the application to crash if syntax errors are introduced.
For text-based variants (MySQL, Game Settings), the best conversion target is TXT or JSON to safely inspect settings without launching the host application. For archiving or documentation, converting configuration data to PDF ensures a snapshot of the system state is preserved.
