About RPG files
The .rpg file extension serves multiple distinct technical purposes across completely unrelated industries. Most frequently, it functions as an industrial robot programming file written in the RAPID language for ABB Robotics. It is used within RobotStudio to store motion control logic, coordinates, and automation tasks. Alternatively, in the software and gaming sector, .rpg files act as project files, character sheets, or game assets for engines like RPG Maker, OHRRPGCE, and RRPG Firecast. Occasionally, they also store protection relay configurations for Schneider Electric equipment.
The major drawback of .rpg files is their extreme fragmentation. Because the extension is claimed by drastically different platforms, default operating systems cannot reliably identify or open them. ABB and Schneider Electric files are proprietary, often requiring expensive enterprise software to view the logic. Meanwhile, RPG Maker files are historically fragmented - a project created in RPG Maker 95 will fail to load in RPG Maker MV. Additionally, some developers use the .rpg extension merely as a wrapper. For example, Celsys Studio Tool uses it for PNG assets, while RRPG Firecast uses it for compressed ZIP archives containing XML data.
To view the source code of an ABB or Panasonic robot program, convert it to TXT or MD for easy reading. If it is an RRPG character sheet, converting it to ZIP allows you to extract the raw data and images. If it is a Celsys game asset, convert it to PNG or WebP for standard web use. The RPG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RPG converter.
