About PRG files

The .PRG extension is a highly polysemous identifier used by dozens of distinct computing environments, ranging from modern industrial software to vintage gaming systems. The two most common variants are xBase source code files (used by dBASE and Microsoft Visual FoxPro) and Commodore 64 executable files.

For developers working with FoxPro or dBASE, a PRG file contains plain text commands and logic. However, opening these files often requires the original (and now discontinued) Integrated Development Environment (IDE), which can cost hundreds of dollars or be impossible to install on Windows 11. These files are functionally text documents but lack the file association to open in standard editors. Users frequently need to convert these scripts to PDF for documentation, DOCX for code reviews, or TXT for universal accessibility without proprietary software.

Conversely, in the realm of retro-computing, a .PRG file is a binary executable program for the Commodore 64 or Atari 8-bit systems. These files are essentially memory dumps containing machine code. The primary difficulty here is that modern operating systems cannot run them directly. To use them, enthusiasts often must wrap or convert these raw executables into disk image formats like D64 or tape images like T64 to ensure compatibility with emulators like VICE. Additionally, .PRG files appear in industrial settings (e.g., PC-DMIS by Hexagon for CMM part inspection) and automotive diagnostics (BMW EDIABAS). These proprietary formats are strictly locked to their hardware, making conversion to TXT or PDF the only way to view the underlying data or logic outside the manufacturing floor.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PRG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted D64, KOALA, PRJ, JPG, TXT, ZIP, FPRG, TAP, PAGES, PNG, JPEG, PDF and DBF files.

The PRG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PRG converter.
