An .OIV file is a compressed distribution package used to automate the installation of user-created modifications (mods) for Rockstar Games titles like Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Red Dead Redemption 2. These packages are specifically designed for the OpenIV modding environment, containing a manifest (assembly.xml) and various game assets. While efficient for installation, the .OIV format acts as a "black box" for many users. You generally cannot preview the textures, scripts, or models inside without installing the specific OpenIV software, which is primarily Windows-only. This proprietary lock-in creates friction for users attempting to manually merge mods, inspect code for conflicts, or access assets on macOS/Linux.
