A .psmodel file is a proprietary 3D CAD/CAM model file created by Autodesk PowerShape (formerly developed by Delcam). These files store complex 3D surface, solid, and mesh data primarily used for industrial manufacturing, tooling, and mold design.
The main disadvantage of the .psmodel format is its tightly closed, proprietary nature. It generally requires an expensive, specialized software subscription to open or edit natively. Standard web browsers, basic 3D viewers, and most alternative CAD programs cannot read these files. They are typically large and extremely frustrating to share with clients or manufacturing partners who lack the proper Autodesk software.
To share these models effectively, users must convert .psmodel files into universal 3D CAD formats like STEP, IGES, or STL. However, because this format relies on a highly proprietary Microsoft Compound Document structure to store intricate manufacturing data, standard online converters almost always fail to process it. Only the original software can reliably parse and export the parametric data without catastrophic loss of geometry.
