The .pa file extension primarily belongs to Print Artist Project files. Created by Sierra Print Artist and now distributed by Nova Development, these files store desktop publishing layouts such as greeting cards, calendars, and brochures. Under the hood, they often use a proprietary Microsoft Compound binary structure. Another common use for the .pa extension is the Pachyderm CAD data file used by Nemetschek Allplan, which functions as an encrypted archive. Minor uses include PowerArchiver compressed files, PulseAudio startup scripts, and Simergy Patternshop designs.
The main disadvantage of .pa files is extreme vendor lock-in. Because the format is proprietary and undocumented, you cannot open a .pa file in standard web browsers, Adobe Creative Cloud apps, or basic image viewers. Users typically want to convert .pa to universal formats like PDF for high-quality printing or JPG and PNG for digital sharing.
