These are compiled ELF (Executable and Linkable Format) binaries used by the console's operating system. Alternatively, the extension is heavily used in the engineering sector for Famic Technologies Automation Studio simulation projects (utilizing a JetDB internal structure) and Pro-face GP-Pro EX HMI screen editor projects. Finally, Microsoft Windows utilizes it for Windows Media video encoding profiles, stored as UTF-16 text.
The main disadvantage of the .PRX format is this extreme lack of standardization. Because over six distinct proprietary ecosystems share the exact same extension, double-clicking the file on a PC almost always results in a confusing error. PSP plugins are compiled machine code strictly bound to MIPS architecture hardware, making them unreadable natively on a desktop. Meanwhile, the industrial project variants are locked behind expensive, highly specialized engineering software suites.
Converting a .PRX file depends entirely on its internal structure. A PlayStation executable cannot be converted to a document; it must be run via an emulator like PPSSPP or analyzed using a hex editor. If the file is a Windows Media Profile, it contains plain XML data and can simply be renamed to TXT for quick editing. For Automation Studio or HMI schematics, you must use the original software to export the visual data to PDF for archiving or DWG for collaboration.
