A .jrxml file is an XML-based report design template used by Jaspersoft JasperReports. It acts as the blueprint for business intelligence reports, storing visual layout definitions, fonts, charts, and database SQL queries. Developers typically create and edit these files using Jaspersoft Studio.
The main disadvantage of the .jrxml format is that it is purely source code. It does not contain any actual report data. If a colleague sends you a .jrxml file, you cannot simply open it to see the final charts or tables. Furthermore, the format relies on a strict, complex XML schema that is messy and difficult to read without specialized software. It also requires a heavy Java environment and an active database connection to actually generate a document.
To share the raw code easily, convert the file to standard TXT or format it as clean XML. If your goal is to view the finished report, you cannot simply convert the file directly; the .jrxml must first be compiled into a jasper file and executed against a database to export the final PDF, XLSX, or HTML document.
