An .ADT file is most commonly an Advantage Database Server table, originally created by Extended Systems and now managed by SAP. These files store structured relational data for enterprise applications. However, the .ADT extension is highly fragmented across completely different industries. It is frequently generated by AutoCAD as a drawing audit report (a plain text log of drawing errors), by Microsoft Word as a document template, and by Blizzard's World of Warcraft as a compiled 3D map asset.
The primary disadvantage of the .ADT format is this extreme fragmentation. When a user receives an .ADT file, the operating system rarely knows which software to launch. The database variant is proprietary and requires an active SAP Sybase environment or specialized database drivers to read, trapping your data in a closed ecosystem. The AutoCAD log variant is just plain text, but the obscure extension prevents standard text editors from recognizing it by default. The World of Warcraft map files are locked binary game assets that cannot be viewed outside of community modding tools.
