About AEP files

The .AEP (After Effects Project) file is the core proprietary format used by Adobe After Effects to store motion graphics, visual effects, and video compositing timelines. Under the hood, it uses the RIFX (Resource Interchange File Format extended) binary structure to save keyframes, layers, mask paths, and file paths pointing to external media assets.

The primary disadvantage of the .AEP format is its rigid proprietary nature. It requires an expensive Adobe Creative Cloud subscription to open and edit. It is crucial to understand that .AEP files are not video files - they contain zero video or audio data. If you share the file without the linked source assets, the project will break and display "offline media" errors. Backward compatibility is also a severe limit; newer files cannot natively open in older software versions. Rarely, the .AEP extension is also used for Activ E-Book Projects and Advanced Encryption Package files.

For web distribution and general viewing, you must render the composition to an MP4 (H.264 codec). For high-end video editing workflows or archiving, convert the output to an MOV (Apple ProRes) file. To hand off vector animations to web developers, export the timeline to a JSON file using the Lottie framework.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AEP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AE, ZIP, AEPX, MOGRT, PRPROJ, AEGRAPHIC, RAR, MP4, EAP, FFX, AET, PDF and TXT files.
