About AEP files

An .AEP file is a proprietary video project file created by Adobe After Effects. It serves as the primary save format for motion graphics and visual effects workflows, storing timelines, keyframe animations, layer data, and mathematical references to external media assets using the RIFX architectural structure.

The most significant disadvantage of the .AEP format is its extreme vendor lock-in. It is not an actual video file and cannot be played by web browsers, smartphones, or standard media players like VLC. Opening an .AEP file natively requires a $22.99/month Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Additionally, because .AEP files only link to external video and audio files rather than embedding them, sharing the project without the accompanying assets routinely causes broken projects and 'Missing Media' errors.

To make the contents viewable, you must render or convert the project into a standard format. For web playback and broad compatibility, convert to MP4 (using the H.264 codec). For lossless integration into other professional editing timelines, convert to MOV (Apple ProRes). For looping social media graphics, convert to GIF. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AEP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AE, ZIP, AEPX, MOGRT, PRPROJ, AEGRAPHIC, RAR, MP4, EAP, FFX, AET, PDF and TXT files.
