Extract text from Project files (PRO)
To convert PRO projects to another format, you need Punch! Home Design or other Cad software.
To convert other file formats to the "Software Project File" file type, you need software like Punch! Home Design or a similar tool.
The .PRO file extension is notoriously overloaded. It is used by dozens of unrelated applications to save working "project" or "profile" data. The most common uses include 3D home design projects for Punch! Home Design Software and Chief Architect, project build files for the Qt framework, and electronic design automation projects in KiCad. Because "pro" simply stands for "project" or "profile," the internal structure varies wildly. A home design .PRO file contains proprietary 3D models, textures, and floor plans, whereas a Qt .PRO file is a simple UTF-8 text file containing cross-platform build instructions.
The major disadvantage of .PRO files is their complete lack of standardization. They are closed, proprietary, or highly specific to a single software ecosystem. You cannot natively preview them in web browsers, and sharing a Punch! or Chief Architect file with a client requires them to buy the same expensive software. Standard online converters frequently fail because they cannot guess which of the 20+ different software applications created the file.
When sharing designs, you must convert these files. Home design and CAD .PRO files should be exported to PDF for document viewing, or DWG and DXF for cross-platform CAD work. Developer and PCB configurations should be converted to standard TXT or XML. However, you will often lose 3D object properties, dynamic toolpaths, or software-specific macros during conversion.
Opening and converting a .PRO file is extremely difficult without the original software.
