The .z02 file extension represents the second volume of a multi-volume split ZIP archive. Created by archive utilities like WinZip or 7-Zip, a split archive divides a massive file or folder into smaller, manageable pieces (typically sequenced as z01, .z02, z03, and ending with a base zip). This fragmentation was traditionally used to bypass restrictive email attachment size limits or to fit large datasets onto physical storage media like CDs or FAT32-formatted USB drives. The primary disadvantage of a .z02 file is that it is fundamentally incomplete. You cannot extract, view, or modify its contents independently. Managing multiple split files is highly inefficient compared to sharing a single file via modern cloud storage.
