Convert a file to IDF
To convert other file formats to the "Multi-purpose Data File" file type, you need software like EnergyPlus or a similar tool.
About IDF files
An .idf file is a highly fragmented extension used by more than a dozen distinct software applications. Primarily, it functions as a JetDB label design database for NiceLabel, a UTF-8 encoded piping isometric drawing file for Hexagon PPM Isogen, or a text-based building energy simulation input file for the EnergyPlus engine. Other common uses include Printed Circuit Board (PCB) data exchange formats for systems like CATIA V5, electrochemical measurement data, and even XML-based Spanish income tax declarations.
The massive disadvantage of the .idf format is its lack of standardization. Opening an .idf file is a guessing game for your operating system. Double-clicking it usually results in an error because a text-based EnergyPlus simulation, a ZIP-compressed Rotork valve data file, and a JetDB database share the exact same extension. Furthermore, reading these files natively requires proprietary, expensive enterprise software.
To overcome these limits, conversion is strictly required. For data extraction, convert text-based or database IDF files to CSV or XML. For sharing Isogen piping drawings, convert to PDF or DXF for universal CAD viewing. If you need to preserve data for archiving, convert to PDF/A. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your IDF file.
If you want to convert IDF file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use EnergyPlus or similar software from the "Simulation & Database Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to IDF, try EnergyPlus or another comparable tool in the "Simulation & Database Storage" category.
The IDF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IDF converter.
