An .IDL file is most commonly an Interface Definition Language file used in software development to define APIs, but it may also be a data file created by NV5 IDL (Interactive Data Language).
The Problem:
If you have the developer variant, the file is technically plain text, but it is useless without compilation. It serves as a "contract" between software components, often for CORBA or Microsoft's COM architecture. You cannot simply "run" it; you must compile it using tools like midl.exe (part of Microsoft Visual Studio) or an ORB compiler. Without these specific build environments, the file is just a blueprint with no functionality.
If you have the scientific variant, the file is often a binary data save or script associated with legacy scientific computing. These files are notoriously difficult to use outside the proprietary IDL ecosystem. They often contain complex multi-dimensional arrays or visualizations that standard image viewers and spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel cannot interpret, locking your research data behind a paywall or license manager.
The Solution:
For developer files, the goal is compilation or documentation. Convert these definitions into header files (H), type libraries (TLB), or Java classes (JAVA) to integrate them into your application. For immediate viewing, treat them as text files.
For scientific data, you typically need to export the internal arrays to CSV or HDF5 for analysis in Python/Matlab, or convert generated plots to PDF or PNG for publication.
