A .PRDX file is most commonly a SoftMaker Presentations Document generated by SoftMaker Office. Structurally, it is an XML-based file housed in a compressed ZIP container, replacing the older PRD binary format. It stores slide layouts, vector graphics, embedded media, and transition metadata. In some educational environments, the format is also associated with Pear Deck interactive presentation archives. A secondary, highly specific use case for the .PRDX extension is as a Construction Cost Estimate file utilized by Athenasoft Norma PRO to store detailed building bids, labor rates, and material costs.
The main disadvantage of the .PRDX format is its severe proprietary lock-in. SoftMaker presentations cannot be natively opened by web browsers, Google Slides, or Microsoft Office, forcing users to install third-party software just to view a simple slide deck. Similarly, Norma PRO estimate files require an expensive, niche software license, creating friction and frustrating delays when sharing quotes with clients or subcontractors who cannot open the file.
To resolve these compatibility limitations, convert .PRDX presentations to PPTX to retain editability across different software, or to PDF to securely lock the layout for printing and sharing. For construction estimates, targeting XLSX or CSV is the most pragmatic approach, allowing clients to review and manipulate pricing data without needing a specialized estimator viewer.
