About PRD files
The .prd extension is shared by two distinct but popular file types, creating frequent confusion.
- Principle Design Prototype (Most Common): Created by Principle for Mac, these files contain high-fidelity interactive UI animations for iOS, Web, and Android apps. The Problem: The format is proprietary and Mac-exclusive. Clients or developers on Windows cannot open a .prd file directly. To share your work, you must typically open the file in Principle and export it to a video format (ProRes / MP4) or an animated GIF. If you have received a .prd file and do not own a Mac, you will need to ask the sender to export it or use a conversion service that supports the plist structure.
- SoftMaker Presentation: A legacy slide deck created by SoftMaker Office. Similar to Microsoft PowerPoint, these files contain slides, text, and transitions. The Problem: Modern Office suites (like Microsoft 365 or LibreOffice) often fail to open .prd files correctly. The Solution: Use the free version of SoftMaker Office to open the file and save it as a PPTX or PDF for universal compatibility.
- Forestry & Industrial Data: In specialized industries, .prd files store harvest production data (StanForD standard) or printer definitions. These are often text or XML-based and can sometimes be viewed in a text editor or imported into Microsoft Excel as CSV data.
