A .PRD file is most commonly an interactive UI design prototype created in Principle for Mac. Under the hood, these files use Apple's plist format to store animation timelines, layer properties, and interaction logic. Other notable uses include presentation documents generated by SoftMaker Presentations (often as ZIP or Microsoft Compound files) and StanForD forest harvester production data.
The main disadvantage of a .PRD Principle file is its strict lock-in to the macOS ecosystem. It cannot be opened natively on Windows or Linux. Viewing the interactive prototype requires a paid proprietary Principle license or its companion iOS viewer app, making it notoriously difficult to share prototypes with cross-platform stakeholders or developers. To share Principle prototypes with clients, you should record the interaction and convert it to MP4 or GIF. For static layer handoffs, converting to PNG or SVG is required. If dealing with a SoftMaker presentation, convert to PPTX or PDF for universal compatibility.
