About PMT files
The .pmt file extension primarily belongs to Adobe PageMaker, an obsolete desktop publishing program. These files act as layout templates holding predefined text styles, master pages, and formatting for newsletters or brochures. They rely on a Microsoft Compound internal structure. Other systems also use the .pmt extension. It appears as a private tables data file in ProcessMaker, a database file for W2Mate, an Electronic Chart Permit File for the IHO S-63 standard, and even a cached MPEG-4 audio file in Tencent QQ Music. Users face significant disadvantages with .pmt files. Adobe PageMaker was discontinued in 2004. Modern computers cannot open these templates natively. They require legacy software or old versions of Adobe InDesign (CS6 or earlier) to access the content. The layout files are proprietary and locked to the Adobe ecosystem. ProcessMaker and W2Mate data files are similarly restrictive, requiring a specific application environment or paid subscription to read the databases. Tencent QQ Music cached files are DRM-protected or uniquely encoded, making them unplayable in standard media players. The best conversion targets depend on the file's origin. PageMaker templates should be converted to INDD for editing or PDF for universal viewing. ProcessMaker and W2Mate files are best exported to CSV or XML to liberate the raw data. Tencent audio files should ideally be converted to MP3 or M4A. However, this file format is difficult to open or convert directly online. These are closed, proprietary formats. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific decoders for obsolete desktop publishing engines or private application databases.
