The .HPGL file extension stands for Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language. It is a raw vector plotter file that contains ASCII text commands instructing a pen plotter how to draw lines, text, and graphics on paper. Today, .HPGL files are predominantly used in the apparel and textile industry. They store 2D clothing patterns exported from CAD/CAM software like Lectra Modaris to be cut or printed on industrial plotters. Opening an .HPGL file natively is difficult. The format is designed for hardware machines, not computer screens. While legacy CAD programs or dedicated viewers can open them, standard operating systems and web browsers cannot read them.
