The .plf extension serves multiple distinct technical roles, most notably as an Oracle Primavera P6 Layout File and a Windows Performance Log.
In the context of Oracle Primavera P6, a PLF file stores the visual configuration of a project schedule - defining columns, bars, colors, and filters - rather than the project data itself. A common downside for project managers is receiving a PLF file expecting a full schedule, only to find they cannot view the data without the accompanying database connection and the P6 client. Users frequently need to convert these layout definitions into PDF for standardized reporting or screenshots to share visual guidelines without requiring recipients to have expensive Oracle licenses.
Alternatively, as a Windows Performance Log (associated with the Windows Performance Toolkit), the file contains binary trace data regarding system events.
