About PLC files

The .PLC extension is a "chameleon" format serving three distinct industries, creating significant confusion for users trying to open it.

  1. GPS Tracking Data: Frequently, this file contains JSON-structured location logs from tracking platforms like GPSWOX. While efficient for the software, these files are effectively "black boxes" to users who simply want to see a route on a map. To make this data usable in standard tools like Google Earth or typical GPS units, you must convert the proprietary JSON structure into standard GPX or KML formats.
  2. PCB Manufacturing (Gerber): In electronics design, a .PLC file often represents the "Silkscreen" or "Component Side" layer within the Gerber RS-274X standard, exported by tools like Autodesk EAGLE. These are specialized vector files sent to board houses. A common issue is the inability to preview these designs without installing expensive CAD software. Converting these layers to PDF or SVG allows for rapid design review and documentation without specialized licenses.
  3. Industrial Automation: The extension also serves as a legacy container for Programmable Logic Controller source code (e.g., PL/B language or older Siemens STEP 7 exports). These files are critical for maintaining industrial machinery but are often locked in binary formats or obscure text encodings. Converting these to plain Text (.TXT) or PDF is the standard procedure for archiving logic and ensuring it remains readable long after the original hardware is obsolete.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PLC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DVP, GXW, RSS, ACD, XML, JPG, RAW, REL, TED and LTD files.

The PLC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PLC converter.
