About RSS files
The .RSS file extension is a source of confusion because it serves three distinct, incompatible purposes. Most commonly recognized as Rich Site Summary (or Really Simple Syndication), these are text-based XML files used by websites to push updates (news, blogs, podcasts) to subscribers. While historically supported by web browsers, modern browsers like Chrome and Edge have removed native RSS rendering, displaying raw code instead of formatted text. This creates friction for users simply wanting to read the content. To make these feeds readable or usable in applications, users convert them to HTML for viewing, JSON for development, or CSV for data analysis.
However, in industrial sectors, an .RSS file is often a binary RSLogix 500 project file created by Rockwell Automation. These contain ladder logic and configuration data for SLC 500 and MicroLogix controllers. The format is a proprietary Microsoft Compound document, meaning it is unreadable without the expensive RSLogix 500 software. Engineers often need to convert these to PDF to document logic or share schematics with technicians who lack a software license. A third variation exists as MiniTool Power Data Recovery scan results, a proprietary format used to save the state of a disk scan; these cannot be converted to usable files directly but allow you to resume recovery sessions in MiniTool.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RSS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The RSS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RSS converter.
