About PIC files
The .PIC filename extension acts as a catch-all container for various legacy and specialized graphic formats, most notably associated with chart files from Lotus 1-2-3 and raster images from 3D software like Autodesk Softimage and Houdini.
Because this extension was historically used by over a dozen different vendors - including Apple (QuickDraw PICT), Bio-Rad (Confocal microscopy), and the Radiance rendering engine - identifying the correct software to open it can be frustrating. Users often face "Invalid File Format" errors because a modern image viewer expects a standard JPEG but encounters a proprietary vector chart or a high-dynamic-range (HDR) texture. Furthermore, legacy Lotus files are essentially locked in the MS-DOS era, requiring specialized emulation or conversion tools to view the data today.
To ensure accessibility and preservation, we recommend converting these files based on their likely origin. For Lotus 1-2-3 vector charts, convert to PDF or SVG to maintain line sharpness. For Softimage, Houdini, or Bio-Rad raster images, convert to PNG or TIFF to preserve image quality without compression artifacts. For generic viewing, converting to JPG offers the widest compatibility.

The PIC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIC converter.
