About PICT files
The .PICT format is a legacy graphics metafile developed by Apple as the standard file format for the QuickDraw rendering API on Classic Mac OS. Historically, it served as the native format for the Macintosh clipboard and applications like Claris MacDraw, capable of storing both object-oriented vector graphics and bitmapped raster images in a single container.
While .PICT was ubiquitous on Mac OS 9 and earlier, it poses significant challenges for modern users. The format is effectively obsolete; Apple replaced QuickDraw with the Quartz graphics system (based on PDF) in macOS X, leaving .PICT with limited to no support on modern operating systems, including Windows 10/11 and recent macOS versions. Users often find that these files cannot be opened by standard image viewers, web browsers, or mobile devices. Furthermore, .PICT files often rely on archaic Run-Length Encoding (RLE) which results in file sizes significantly larger than modern compression standards.
To ensure accessibility and preservation, we recommend converting these files immediately. For general viewing and web use, convert .PICT to JPG or PNG. If the file contains vector line art or text that needs to remain scalable, converting to PDF is the optimal choice for archiving. For professional editing in raster software like Adobe Photoshop, converting to TIFF preserves the highest image quality.

The PICT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PICT converter.
