About PICT files
The .PICT file is a legacy Macintosh graphics format created by Apple for its QuickDraw rendering API. Originally the standard image format for classic Mac OS, it functioned as a metafile capable of storing both raster bitmaps and vector data.
The modern reality is that .PICT is completely obsolete. Apple deprecated the underlying QuickDraw framework in macOS 10.4 and removed it entirely in macOS 10.8. You cannot open a .PICT file natively on modern macOS, Windows, mobile devices, or web browsers. Older media applications like Adobe Photoshop or QuickTime Player historically supported it, but recent software updates have largely stripped out this 32-bit legacy compatibility.
To rescue these old graphics, you must convert them. For general viewing and web use, convert the file to PNG (for lossless quality) or JPG (for smaller file sizes). If your .PICT file was created in a vector application like MacDraw II, converting to PDF or SVG might preserve the original vector geometry. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The PICT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PICT converter.
