About PGN files
A .PGN file is a plain text file that uses Portable Game Notation to store chess games, including the move history (in algebraic notation) and metadata such as player names, Elo ratings, and tournament details. While .PGN is the universal standard for sharing chess data across platforms like Lichess and Chess.com, relying on raw text files has significant limitations. Reading a game solely from text requires advanced visualization skills, and standard text editors often crash when opening massive database files containing millions of games. Furthermore, .PGN files do not natively support visual board diagrams, making them poor candidates for printing or casual study without specialized rendering software. To overcome these hurdles, users frequently convert .PGN files to PDF for generating printable score sheets with diagrams, or to proprietary database formats like CBH for use in high-performance software like ChessBase.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PGN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PGN file to FEN, GIF, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP or MAP, you can use ChessBase or similar software from the "Chess Game Recording" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to PGN, try ChessBase or another comparable tool in the "Chess Game Recording" category.
The PGN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PGN converter.
