About P files

The .p file extension is most commonly associated with Python Pickle files and MATLAB P-code files. In the Python ecosystem, .p files store serialized object hierarchies generated by the Python pickle module. This allows developers to save application states or machine learning models like those from pandas. In MATLAB, .p files represent pre-parsed, obfuscated source code designed to hide the original intellectual property of m scripts. Less frequently, .p files are used for Pascal Source Code, legacy Google Picasa databases, or BioWare game assets.

The primary disadvantage of .p files is their extreme lack of portability. Python pickle files are highly version-dependent; a file pickled in older versions often breaks in modern environments. Furthermore, they pose severe security risks because unpickling untrusted data can secretly execute malicious code. MATLAB P-code files are deliberately locked down, making them impossible to read or edit natively. They require a proprietary and expensive MATLAB license just to execute.

For data sharing, archiving, and safety, you must convert these files into open formats. For Python data, extract and convert the contents to JSON or CSV for human-readable web use, or Parquet for large datasets. For MATLAB, exporting runtime variables to MAT or CSV is standard, though reversing P-code back to m requires highly specialized decompilation.
