About P files

A .P file is primarily used as a serialized Python data object (created by the Python pickle module) or a pre-parsed MATLAB P-code file. Less frequently, it may act as Pascal source code or a legacy Google Picasa database file. Python developers use the .p extension (often interchangeably with PKL) to save complex programming structures directly to disk. MATLAB users use .p files to distribute executable scripts without revealing the original proprietary source code. The main disadvantage of a Python .p file is its strict lock-in to the Python ecosystem and its severe security risks. Unpickling a file from an untrusted source can execute malicious code on your machine. Furthermore, it is a proprietary binary format that cannot be read in a text editor, database, or web browser without a Python environment. MATLAB P-code files face a different challenge: they are obfuscated by design, meaning you cannot edit them or view the underlying logic. To make Python data usable, secure, and readable across different systems, conversion is mandatory. For web use and cross-platform scripting, convert your Python pickle to JSON. For spreadsheet analysis or database import, convert to CSV. If you just need to inspect the contents quickly, convert to TXT. Note that converting MATLAB P-code back to readable M source code is intentionally blocked by the format's design.
