About PFI files
The .PFI file extension is most commonly associated with PhotoFiltre Studio, a shareware raster graphics editor. It serves as the software's native project format, capable of storing multiple layers, transparency settings, and selection data similar to Adobe's PSD. While excellent for editing within the PhotoFiltre Studio ecosystem, this format presents significant compatibility hurdles in the wider world. It is a strictly proprietary format, meaning industry-standard tools like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and web browsers cannot natively open or render it. If you send a .PFI file to a client or colleague, they likely won't be able to view it.
To make these files usable, conversion is almost always necessary. For web publishing or sharing via email, converting to PNG is recommended to preserve transparency, or JPG for standard photography, though both will flatten your layers into a single image. If you are dealing with the less common ProfiCAD electrical drawing variant of this file, converting to PDF or DXF is essential for printing and CAD interoperability. Convert.guru allows you to bypass the need for installing niche software by handling these conversions directly in your browser.

The PFI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PFI converter.
