Convert a file to PFI
To convert other file formats to the "Layered Graphic Document" file type, you need software like PhotoFiltre Studio X or a similar tool.
About PFI files
The .PFI file format is primarily used as a PhotoFiltre Studio Image document. It is a proprietary raster image format designed by PhotoFiltre Studio to store multi-layered graphics. Unlike flat images, these files retain individual graphic layers, text elements, opacity settings, and adjustment masks, allowing designers to resume editing later. Secondary applications also use the .PFI extension for entirely different data types, including electrical drawing project files in ProfiCAD, disk image index files created by Paragon Software or Backup Exec, and heating controller firmware updates for PLUM ecoMAX systems.
The primary disadvantage of the .PFI format is its proprietary, closed nature. You cannot open a .PFI layered image natively on Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS. Standard web browsers and default image viewers completely lack the required decoders. Furthermore, because these files store multiple layers of uncompressed image data, they easily exceed standard email attachment limits. Users are often forced to install specific desktop software just to view the content. This creates massive friction when sharing design mockups or electrical schematics with clients who do not own the original applications.
To make these files usable across different devices, you must convert them to universally supported formats. Converting a .PFI image to PNG or JPG is the best approach for web sharing, though this process will flatten the image and permanently merge the individual editable layers. If your file is a ProfiCAD electrical drawing, exporting it to a PDF document is the standard method to share the schematics securely without requiring CAD software.
Because .PFI is an undocumented closed format, standard online converters almost always fail to process it. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the complex layered data. However, you do not need to be stuck. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the exact format version, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible without buying expensive software subscriptions.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your PFI file.
If you want to convert PFI file to BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z or RAR, you can use PhotoFiltre Studio X or similar software from the "Layered Raster Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to PFI, try PhotoFiltre Studio X or another comparable tool in the "Layered Raster Image Storage" category.
The PFI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PFI converter.
