Convert a file to PDN
To convert other file formats to the "Layered Image Workspace" file type, you need software like Paint.NET or a similar tool.
About PDN files
The .PDN file format is primarily a layered raster graphics workspace created by Paint.NET, a popular free image editing software for Windows. Originally developed by Rick Brewster, this format stores raw project data, including image layers, transparency, blending modes, and adjustments. A rare secondary use (under 1% of files) is the Portable Draughts Notation text format by Wieger Wesselink, used for recording checkers game moves.
You need to convert .PDN files because they are strictly proprietary and severely limit accessibility. They are not supported by web browsers, mobile devices, or standard operating system image viewers. Opening them natively requires a Windows machine with Paint.NET installed. Sharing a .PDN file with a client or a Mac user guarantees they will not be able to view it. Furthermore, professional graphic suites like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP cannot read .PDN files without installing unofficial third-party plugins.
For web publishing and general sharing, convert to JPG or WEBP (note: this will flatten the image and remove layers). If you need to share a flat image with a transparent background, convert to PNG. For professional editing and archiving where layer data must be preserved, converting to PSD (Photoshop Document) or TIFF is the best workaround. The PDN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PDN converter.
