Extract text from Keyboard layouts and materials (KMP)
To convert KMP Layouts and materials to another format, you need SIL Keyman or other Settings software.
To convert other file formats to the "Configuration Profile or Package" file type, you need software like SIL Keyman or a similar tool.
A .kmp file primarily serves as a SIL Keyman keyboard layout package or a KeyShot material package. It is also used by Korg synthesizers for multisample programs, by the LDPlayer emulator for Android keymapping, and by IBM terminal emulators.
The biggest disadvantage of the .KMP format is its extreme fragmentation. Since multiple unrelated developers use the exact same extension, users frequently face "unrecognized format" errors. Standard viewers fail because they cannot distinguish between an audio mapping file, a 3D texture package, or a text-based emulator layout. Furthermore, Keyman and KeyShot variants are actually renamed ZIP archives, hiding their true structure from the operating system. Korg multisample files are proprietary binary files that lock instrument mapping data to specific hardware.
Converting a .KMP file depends entirely on its actual internal data. For Keyman and KeyShot packages, the most effective target format is ZIP, allowing you to extract internal fonts, raw 3D textures (JPG, PNG), and layout scripts. LDPlayer keymaps are natively structured as JSON, meaning they can be seamlessly converted to TXT or edited as raw code. Converting Korg multisamples is much harder; they require dedicated sampler translation software to rebuild the underlying audio into standard WAV or SF2 soundfont formats.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert with standard tools because it lacks a unified specification. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. We can identify the exact type of .kmp file, inspect its internal headers, and show you embedded text or internal content.
