Extract text from Game data packages (OVL)

The .OVL file is primarily a Game Data Package File used by the Cobra Engine, developed by Frontier Developments. It stores compressed game assets such as 3D models, textures, audio, and scripts for titles like Jurassic World Evolution, Planet Coaster, and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3. Historically, the .OVL extension was also used for MS-DOS executable memory overlays to bypass 640KB RAM limits, and more recently, for Nintendo Switch homebrew overlay menus.
The main disadvantage of the .OVL format is its proprietary, closed-source nature. It is heavily encrypted or compressed specifically for the host game engine, making it completely unreadable outside of its parent game without specialized unpacking tools. Modders face strict limitations when handling these files, as standard archiving software like 7-Zip or WinRAR cannot open them natively. Repacking modified assets into a working .OVL often requires reverse-engineered community scripts.
To edit or repurpose the assets locked inside an .OVL file, you must extract and convert the internal data to standard formats. For web use and texture editing, convert extracted images to PNG or WebP. For 3D model manipulation in software like Blender, convert meshes to OBJ or FBX. For audio archiving, target WAV.
