The .BNK extension most commonly identifies a Wwise SoundBank, a proprietary container format developed by Audiokinetic used extensively in video game development. These files act as libraries that group audio assets, sound effects, and music tracks along with the logic (events) needed to trigger them during gameplay. Because .BNK files are binary middleware archives rather than standard audio streams, they cannot be opened by consumer media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. This proprietary lock-in is a major catch for gamers and modders attempting to extract game soundtracks or voice lines. To access the audio, the internal WEM (Wwise Encoded Media) files must first be extracted and often decoded from proprietary Vorbis variations. For general listening or editing, the best workflow is converting these extracted assets to WAV for lossless quality or MP3 for broad compatibility.
A secondary but significant use of the .BNK extension is for ExamView Test Banks. These files contain collections of questions and answers used by educators to generate quizzes within the ExamView Assessment Suite (now part of Turning Technologies).
