About Z2F files

A .z2f file is a game data archive used by Zoo Tycoon 2, a business simulation game published by Microsoft. These files function as containers for game modifications (mods), expansions, and official content patches, storing essential assets such as XML behavior scripts, DDS textures, NIF 3D models, and LUA code.

Technically, a .z2f file is simply a standard ZIP archive with a renamed extension. This naming convention prevents the operating system from treating them as generic folders, ensuring the game engine loads them correctly from the installation directory. Users frequently face difficulties because Windows does not associate .z2f files with file archivers by default. Consequently, users cannot double-click to view the contents, leading to confusion about how to install or edit mods. While no complex conversion is required to open them, users typically need to "convert" (rename) them to ZIP to inspect or modify the internal assets using tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip.

Convert.Guru analyzes your Z2F file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BFM, SIG, OVL, ZIP, ZTD, DL and NPZ files.

The Z2F Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our Z2F converter.
