About SGD files

The .SGD file extension primarily acts as a proprietary Gel Electrophoresis Image Data file generated by Syngene GeneTools and GeneSnap laboratory software. Structurally, these scientific image files utilize a Microsoft Compound container format. The primary disadvantage of this format is severe vendor lock-in; viewing or analyzing the electrophoresis bands typically requires an expensive, active laboratory software license. Standard operating systems and browsers cannot natively render them. To publish these images in scientific journals or share them with peers, users must extract and convert the internal data to standard, lossless formats like TIFF, or web-friendly alternatives like PNG and JPG.

Beyond scientific equipment, .SGD is heavily fragmented. It is widely used as a generic extension for video game save files (notably in the Batman: Arkham series, Stronghold, and Sacred), as UTF-8 encoded launch configurations for Oracle Secure Global Desktop, and as XML data structures in Statgraphics. Because of this extreme fragmentation, generic online converters fail completely. Binary game saves and proprietary lab images are inherently difficult to convert because only the original software possesses the proper decoding algorithms. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru will inspect the internal headers, extract readable text or embedded TIFF/XML streams, and offer conversion options if a supported underlying format is detected.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SGD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SGDT, SDG, SGDR, SGDD, BAK1SAVE0X1, JPG, SVG, OSC, WEBP, SCN, SDA, PDF and ZIP files.

The SGD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SGD converter.
