About OLB files
The .OLB extension is most frequently associated with the OrCAD Capture Schematic Library, a proprietary format developed by Cadence Design Systems. These files function as containers for electronic component symbols - such as resistors, capacitors, and ICs - used during the schematic capture phase of PCB design. A common problem for engineers is the strict proprietary lock-in; .OLB files are binary and version-sensitive, often refusing to open in older versions of OrCAD Capture or competing EDA tools like Altium Designer. Users typically need to convert these libraries to PDF for non-technical stakeholder review, or export them to ASCII-based formats (like XML or EDIF) to migrate data between design environments.
Alternatively, roughly 30% of .OLB files are OLE Object Libraries created by Microsoft. These are developer-centric files containing type definitions for Automation servers, used by languages like Visual Basic and C++ to understand available classes and interfaces within a DLL or EXE. They are functionally similar to TLB files. Developers often encounter these when trying to reverse-engineer legacy code or debug COM components. Because they are compiled binary resources, they are unreadable in standard text editors. The solution is to use an object viewer or decompiler to "convert" the binary data into human-readable Interface Definition Language (IDL) text or simply view the member functions.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OLB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ZIP, DRA, DSN, PDF, DLL, EXE, RPMSG, TSX, OPJ, MIN and SMV files.
The OLB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OLB converter.
