About DRA files
The .DRA extension represents two distinct file types used in very different industries.
Most commonly (82%), a .DRA file is a voice recording created by Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking. These files store the user's dictated audio synced with the transcribed text, allowing for playback during correction. The problem is that .DRA files are proprietary and often use a Microsoft Compound container that standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot open. To listen to these recordings on mobile devices or share them with transcribers, users must convert them to standard MP3 or WAV formats.
Alternatively, in electrical engineering, a .DRA file is a binary drawing file generated by Cadence Allegro. These files define the physical footprint of PCB components (pads, silk screens, assembly outlines). Because they are strictly for design software, they are inaccessible to clients or manufacturers without expensive EDA licenses. Engineers typically convert these .DRA files to PDF for documentation, DXF for mechanical modeling, or Gerber files for manufacturing.

The DRA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DRA converter.
