The .T3D file extension primarily identifies a text-based object export used by Unreal Engine. Unlike standard binary UASSET files, T3D files store game level data, actors, and properties in a human-readable text format, often generated when copying objects to the clipboard or exporting for version control. While this transparency is useful for developers, it presents a major barrier for artists: .T3D files contain object definitions (scripts) rather than raw geometry, meaning they cannot be opened directly in standard 3D modeling tools like Blender or Autodesk Maya. To edit the actual 3D mesh, users typically must re-import the T3D file into the Unreal Editor and then export it to a compatible interchange format like FBX or OBJ.
A secondary, legacy use of the format is for Swift 3D documents. These files contain vector-based 3D animations used in the Flash era. Users with these archived files often face proprietary lock-in as the original software is discontinued. For these cases, the goal is converting the vector data to AI (Adobe Illustrator) or SVG for modern graphic design workflows.
