The .OFD (Open Fixed-layout Document) format is the national standard for electronic documents in China, functioning effectively as the "Chinese PDF." It is primarily used for electronic invoices (fapiao), government records, and financial reports requiring strict layout fidelity and Chinese cryptographic support (SM2/SM3).
The Problem: Most global PDF viewers, including Adobe Acrobat and standard web browsers (Chrome, Edge), cannot open OFD files. Users typically receive these files as email attachments from Chinese vendors or tax authorities and find themselves unable to view the content. While the file structure is technically a ZIP container holding XML data (similar to DOCX), manually unzipping it yields unreadable raw code rather than the formatted document.
The Solution: For immediate viewing and printing, the best course of action is to convert the .OFD file to PDF. This preserves the visual layout, stamps, and text while making the document accessible on any device. For editing or data extraction, converting to DOCX or image formats (JPG, PNG) is also common.
