An .ODF file is most commonly an OpenDocument Formula file. It stores mathematical equations and scientific formulas using a ZIP-compressed XML structure defined by the OASIS OpenDocument standard. These files are typically created and edited using LibreOffice Math or Apache OpenOffice. Less frequently, an .ODF file is a proprietary electronic form document generated by legacy software like Nuance OmniForm or OmniPage Pro, which relies on the older Microsoft Compound file format structure. Finally, some .ODF files are raw text object definition files used for modding the classic PC game Battlezone by Activision.
The biggest disadvantage of the .ODF format is strict software dependency. Most everyday users do not have a dedicated equation editor installed on their devices. If you send an .ODF formula to a client or try to open it on a mobile phone, it will fail to open. Legacy OmniForm files present an even worse challenge: the original software is discontinued, locking your business form data inside a proprietary format that modern operating systems cannot read.
