Extract text from Apabi eBooks and backups (CEB)
To convert CEB Apabi files to another format, you need Apabi Reader or other E-Book software.
To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary eBook Format" file type, you need software like Apabi Reader or a similar tool.
The .CEB file is primarily an Apabi eBook file, a proprietary format developed by Founder Apabi Technology for Chinese digital publications and academic libraries. A secondary use for the .CEB extension is as an encrypted chat message backup generated by the open-source Conversations XMPP client.
To open the eBook variant, users traditionally rely on the legacy Apabi Reader software. To open a chat backup, you must import the file directly into the Conversations Android application using the original encryption passphrase.
Users frequently struggle with .CEB files because they are highly restrictive. The Apabi format is an obsolete, closed standard heavily encumbered by Digital Rights Management (DRM). It is not supported by web browsers, modern smartphones, or standard e-readers. The chat backup variant is securely encrypted, making the data entirely unreadable outside the native app without the decryption key.
For eBook files, converting .CEB to EPUB or PDF is highly recommended. These target formats ensure cross-platform compatibility on devices like Apple Books or Amazon Kindle, though converting may result in the loss of original DRM protections and specialized text rendering features.
