About NULL files
A .null file is not a standard format. It is a generic placeholder extension applied when a file has lost its original extension, has been quarantined by enterprise security software, or has been encrypted by ransomware. Operating systems rely on extensions to identify file types. When a file is named .null, your computer cannot associate it with the correct application, meaning double-clicking it will result in an error.
Depending on where the file originated, it could actually be a standard PDF document from Adobe, an MP4 video playable in VLC media player, or a quarantined ZIP archive stripped by an email security gateway like Mimecast. You can read more about how operating systems handle extensions on the Wikipedia File Format page.
The main disadvantage of a .null file is total loss of accessibility. Quarantined attachments are deliberately broken this way to prevent users from executing potential malware. Ransomware-encrypted .null files are completely locked and require a decryption key. If the file is simply a broken download, you must identify its "magic bytes" (file header) to restore it.
To make these files usable, you must convert or rename them to their true format. For documents, convert to PDF for archiving and easy reading. For videos, convert to MP4 for web use and universal playback. Drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The NULL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NULL converter.
