About NCI files

The .NCI file extension primarily represents Native Control Interchange data generated by Mastercam. These are intermediate files that act as a bridge between the visual CAD geometry and the final machine-readable G-code (NC, NCC, TAP) required by CNC machines.

Users often struggle with .NCI files because they are not directly executable by CNC controllers. They contain generic toolpath coordinates that must be processed through a specific machine definition (Post Processor) to become usable code. While they are text-readable, they lack the specific headers and formatting your machine needs.

A secondary, less common use of the .NCI extension is for NAVAIR Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM). In this context, the file is simply a renamed ZIP archive containing technical documentation (PDF, HTML, XML) for military equipment maintenance. These files often require the specialized NAVAIR IETM Viewer or can be opened by renaming the extension to ZIP.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NCI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MC9, MAZ, MC7, UCI, MCI, DPM and PCI files.

The NCI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NCI converter.
