About MAZ files

The .MAZ file extension primarily represents a Mazatrol CNC program file created for industrial CNC machines manufactured by Mazak Corporation. These files contain highly specific machining instructions, tool paths, and coordinate data used to automate manufacturing. The major disadvantage of this format is its strictly proprietary nature. You cannot natively open a .MAZ file in standard text editors. It requires expensive, specialized CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software like Mastercam or Mazak's own proprietary editors. Converting .MAZ to standard G-code (NC or TXT) is a frequent requirement when moving production to non-Mazak machines, but standard online converters fail because the encoding is closed and tied to specific machine parameters. A secondary use for the .MAZ extension is as a legacy game level data file, specifically the Merlin Static Maze File used in the classic Windows 95 game Microsoft Hover!. Because standard converters cannot interpret proprietary CNC logic or vintage game formats, these files are notoriously difficult to process online.
