The .MYO file extension is primarily a proprietary company data file used by MYOB AccountRight and legacy AccountEdge software. It acts as a comprehensive database that stores a company's financial data, including ledgers, payroll information, tax records, and customer directories.
Because it is a proprietary and highly specialized database format, you face significant disadvantages when handling .MYO files. You cannot open or read them without paying for an active MYOB subscription. The file architecture is closed, and compatibility is often strictly tied to specific software versions. A file saved in a 2018 version of MYOB might throw errors if opened in a 2021 version without a proper upgrade process.
