About MUSX files
A .musx file is a proprietary music notation score created by MakeMusic Finale. Introduced in Finale 2014, the format packages musical staves, notes, lyrics, layout configurations, and MIDI playback data inside a ZIP-compressed container. A small percentage of .musx files are completely unrelated audio containers used by Electronic Arts (EA) video games.
The core disadvantage of the .musx format is its severe vendor lock-in. You cannot open, view, or play a .musx file natively on Windows, macOS, or mobile devices. It requires an active installation of expensive Finale software or the limited Finale Notepad. Competing notation programs like Avid Sibelius or Steinberg Dorico cannot import .musx files directly, creating significant workflow bottlenecks for composers and musicians collaborating across different platforms.
To break free from these limitations, conversion is mandatory. For printing, sharing, or archiving sheet music, convert .musx to PDF. For editing the score in other software, extract it to MusicXML or XML. If you only need the audio, convert the MIDI playback data to MP3 or WAV. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
