About FTMX files

A .ftmx file is a Finale Score Template used by MakeMusic Finale to store pre-configured document settings, including staves, instrumentation, page margins, and proprietary music fonts. Used primarily by professional composers and arrangers, these templates act as a blank starting point so users do not have to rebuild complex orchestral layouts from scratch for every new project.

The .ftmx format is highly proprietary and closed. It cannot be opened by standard web browsers, basic document editors, or even competing music notation software like Sibelius or Dorico. Users frequently face extreme frustration when trying to share these templates with colleagues or students who do not possess a paid Finale subscription.

To make the file usable across different platforms, you must convert it to a universal format. The best conversion target is Compressed MusicXML (mxl) or standard MusicXML (xml), which allows the score data to be imported into almost any modern notation program. For simple viewing or printing, exporting to PDF is the optimal choice. Note that converting to MusicXML preserves most structural data, but you may lose exact proprietary font spacing.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online. Because it is a closed format designed specifically for the Finale rendering engine, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects supported embedded XML data, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FTMX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
