About MUS files

The .MUS file extension primarily represents proprietary music notation scores created by MakeMusic Finale (versions 2012 and older). These files contain detailed musical information, including staves, time signatures, notes, and layout data for printing sheet music.

The Challenge: As a proprietary binary format, .MUS files are heavily locked into the Finale ecosystem. With MakeMusic ending development of Finale in 2024, accessing these legacy files is becoming increasingly difficult. Newer versions of Finale use the MUSX format, and .MUS files cannot be opened natively by web browsers, standard text editors, or competing software like Sibelius or MuseScore. Furthermore, a distinct, secondary type of .MUS file exists as lightweight background music for vintage games like DOOM and Minecraft, which function similarly to MIDI files but require specific players.

The Solution:

Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your MUS file.

Users also converted MUSX, PDF, MPF, MP3, BAK, RAR, ZIP, MSCZ, MJS, MUSICXML, ASV, OGG and SIB files.
