The .MODD file extension is utilized by Sony digital camcorders and the Sony PlayMemories Home software to store management information. These are XML-based sidecar files that contain technical metadata - such as GPS locations, timestamps, aspect ratios, and scene analysis data - describing an associated video file (typically M2TS, MTS, or MPG). They do not contain any actual audio or visual media.
A frequent source of confusion occurs when users attempt to open a .MODD file in media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player, resulting in playback errors. Because the file is merely a text container for data, it is technically impossible to convert it into a video format like MP4 or MOV. Furthermore, these files can clutter backup directories, leading users to wonder if they are essential.
