About MODD files

.MODD files are proprietary sidecar metadata files created primarily by Sony PlayMemories Home and legacy Sony Picture Motion Browser software. They accompany Sony AVCHD video files (such as MTS and M2TS) to store essential timeline tracking, GPS coordinates, date/time stamps, and video analysis metadata.

The underlying structure of nearly all .MODD files is standard XML. Because they are heavily tied to the Sony software ecosystem, these files frequently frustrate users by cluttering folders whenever a camera is synced to a computer.

Many users mistakenly believe they need to convert .MODD to MP4 or AVI. However, a .MODD file contains zero video or audio data. The biggest disadvantage of this format is that it is completely useless on its own and unrecognized by standard media players like VLC. If you want to view the actual data inside, the best target formats are standard text-based formats like XML, TXT, or JSON.

Because this is a closed, manufacturer-specific metadata format, standard online video converters will fail to process it. Usually, only the original Sony software can correctly interpret the analysis data to map out clips. Despite this limitation, you can drag and drop your file into convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our analysis engine can detect the embedded XML structure, allowing you to bypass Sony's restrictions, inspect the raw text content, and safely extract the readable metadata.
