About MOI files

A .MOI file is a proprietary Management Information file created by digital camcorders from manufacturers like JVC, Panasonic, and Canon. It acts as a "sidecar" index for a corresponding MOD or TOD video file.

Users typically encounter .MOI files when backing up SD cards from older camcorders (like the JVC Everio series). The core problem users face is that .MOI files cannot be "played" or "opened" by standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player because they contain no video or audio data. They act strictly as a database, storing the recording's timestamp, aspect ratio (16:9 vs 4:3), and codec details. If you try to open one, you will likely see a "File not supported" error. The actual video content resides in the much larger MOD file sitting next to it.
