Convert a file to MDD

To convert other file formats to the "Offline Dictionary Data File" file type, you need software like MDict or a similar tool.

About MDD files

The .mdd file primarily functions as an MDict Dictionary Resource file or an MDict data file. These files are used in conjunction with MDX files to store offline dictionary databases. While the MDX file holds the text definitions, the .mdd file stores binary resource data, such as images, audio pronunciations, and formatting stylesheets used in the dictionary entries. Alternatively, the extension is used as an XML-based survey metadata file in IBM SPSS Dimensions, a MATLAB driver, a MicroStation drawing, or a document in PTC Mathcad.

You can open MDict files using MDict or open-source alternatives like GoldenDict. SPSS metadata files require IBM SPSS, while mathematical and drawing formats require Mathcad or MicroStation.

Users often need to convert .MDD files because the MDict format is highly specialized and generally unsupported outside of dedicated dictionary reader software. You cannot easily extract the embedded audio or images to use elsewhere without specialized extraction tools. Furthermore, if your .mdd is an SPSS metadata file or Mathcad document, you typically must have an active, expensive software license just to view the data. Standard text editors cannot parse the binary resource blobs in MDict files or the complex formatting of CAD documents.

The best conversion targets depend on the file's underlying data. For MDict files, users typically want to extract the resources into standard formats like JPG, PNG, or MP3. For SPSS survey metadata, converting to XML, CSV, or TXT is ideal to make the data readable.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is often a closed, proprietary container (in the case of MDict) or an application-specific binary. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process these nuances. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Even if it is a proprietary binary, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The MDD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MDD converter.
