About MIF files
The .MIF file extension represents multiple completely distinct formats, most commonly the MapInfo Interchange Format used for geographic information systems (GIS) or the Maker Interchange Format used by desktop publishing software. MapInfo .MIF files store vector map geometries (like polygons, lines, and points) in plain ASCII text and are almost always paired with a MID file that contains the corresponding attribute data. The Maker Interchange Format is an ASCII-based markup language created by Adobe to represent text, graphics, and layout structures for Adobe FrameMaker documents.
While highly versatile for software interchange, .MIF files suffer from significant real-world usability limits. Because they are plain text, complex GIS maps or long FrameMaker documents result in massive, uncompressed files that are slow to read and transfer. Furthermore, they are proprietary interchange formats; MapInfo .MIF cannot be natively rendered by web browsers or standard mapping APIs, and Maker .MIF cannot be opened by standard word processors like Microsoft Word. They require expensive desktop software to view or edit properly.
To make this data useful, conversion is mandatory. For web mapping and modern GIS workflows, convert MapInfo .MIF files to GeoJSON or KML. For standard GIS interoperability, convert to an ESRI Shapefile (SHP). If dealing with a FrameMaker .MIF document, convert it to PDF for universal viewing or archiving, and DOCX for collaborative editing. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your MIF file.
If you want to convert MIF file to SHP, TAB, NII, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON or ECW, you can use MapInfo Pro or similar software from the "GIS Data & Document Interchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to MIF, try MapInfo Pro or another comparable tool in the "GIS Data & Document Interchange" category.
The MIF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MIF converter.
