About MIF files

The .MIF file extension represents several distinct formats, most notably the MapInfo Interchange Format and the Maker Interchange Format. MapInfo .MIF files are ASCII-based geographic data files used by MapInfo Pro to export vector graphics like boundaries, roads, and points. These files are typically paired with a MID file containing the attribute data. Alternatively, .MIF stands for Maker Interchange Format, a text-based document format used by Adobe FrameMaker to store page layouts, text, and graphics for desktop publishing. Other, less common uses include Memory Initialization Files for Intel Quartus FPGA programming and Health Level Seven (HL7) XML models.

The main disadvantage of .MIF files is their proprietary nature and extreme reliance on specialized software. To view or edit a MapInfo file, you need expensive GIS software or technical knowledge to operate open-source alternatives like QGIS. If you lose the accompanying MID file, the spatial data loses all of its tabular context. FrameMaker .MIF files are similarly restrictive; they are designed to bypass binary file corruption but still require an active, costly Adobe subscription to render the document properly. They are completely unsupported by web browsers and standard office suites.

To make these files usable, you must convert them. For GIS data, convert .MIF to SHP (Shapefile) for broad compatibility or GeoJSON for modern web mapping applications. For FrameMaker documents, convert .MIF to PDF for archiving and printing, or to DOCX if you need to edit the text in Microsoft Word. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing heavy desktop software. convert.guru automatically detects your file's underlying structure and provides the correct conversion options instantly.

The MIF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MIF converter.
